Socks are worn to cover the feet and to protect it from the elements and also from rubbing against the shoes. The earliest form of socks were manufactured from leather but some early shoe designs would have a lining inside them made out of cloth or leather to protect the feet while wearing the shoe.
The human feet have a lot of sweat glands, hence when one wears socks it soaks up the excess sweat. Both of them together can give off as much as a half a pint a day. So wearing socks is a good idea to keep odor at bay and make one more acceptable being around people. But its not only for the above mentioned reasons that one wears socks, nowadays socks are also a fashion accessory.
It’s clear that the use of socks goes back a very long time ago. Many millennia ago there is archeological evidence that people made a crude form of socks out of animal hair. This practice still continues to this day what with the frequent use of wool to make socks. Not only wool is used in this day and age, other materials such as nylon, cotton, polyester and spandex are frequently used.
Some exotic varieties may also include silk, linen and cashmere. With the introduction of artificial materials such as spandex and nylon, it was possible to make socks that would stretch therefore tighter socks that fit the feet well and aided in its comfort. Nylon-cotton or nylon-silk blends are such examples.
The variety of socks today is amazing, they have come a long way since the days they were just a piece of animal skin or hair. Socks are available all different lengths and not to mention color patterns to suit just about anybodies taste. A type of sock that is gaining popularity today is the no show socks, it is a very short variety which stays below the ankles, hence it cannot be seen when wearing shoes.
