Batik – what is it? Actually, most of us have seen it but just did not know what its called. Its a cloth material that is patterned using dying techniques. Often you will see batik as wall hangs, as garments on men and women – particularly Indonesians and Malaysians, as table or chair “throws” as light rugs on floors and batik can be used in other ways too.

The south eastern island of Malaysia is made up of Sarawak and Sabah, which are part of Borneo – the third largest island in the world. Borneo is split between three countries – Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. The capital city of Sarawak is Kuching, which is the largest city on Borneo with a population of almost 600,000 people, mostly Malays and Chinese.
